Ilango (Srikanth) and Sriram (Jai Akash) are best friends. Ilango is the only son of Radhika and Raghuvaran, who are interested in anything but his academics. He falls in love with Mano (Bhumika Chawla), who also eventually happens to reside opposite their house, with her loudmouthed sub-inspector mother (Rekha). With the responsibilities of a brother to get his sisters married, Sriram leaves for Libya on a job received through Ilango’s parents. Before he leaves, he tells Ilango that Mano and himself are in love, and asks Ilango to look after his lover until he is back. Ilango swallows his love secret for the sake of friendship. Meanwhile, Bhumika’s mother arranges for her to get married to Vijay Adhiraj for his wealth. At this juncture, Mano and Ilango lie that they are already married. They both leave their parents, and Ilango starts earning to support Mano. Finishing his job assignment, Sriram returns, only to give yet another family responsibility as an excuse. He apologizes for not being able to marry Mano as he is a tight corner to marry somebody else for the sake of his sister’s marriage. Later, Mano leaves to Mumbai after a job opportunity. Ilango’s parents come to know the truth that he and Mano are not married. They accept them. Radhika knows Mano as the girl Ilango loved, but he would not accept it since Mano might think wrong of him. Later in the train station, things turn plates and Mano comes to know that she is the girl he loved and accepts him.

Durairaj (Sarath Kumar) is a lorry driver who is tough as a nail. He had a bitter childhood, has no relatives or friends, and his only solace is Jayaram (Jayaram), his cleaner who is just the opposite of him. Jayaram is a happy-go-lucky guy who dotes on his wife Mallika (Meena), mother (Vadivukkarasi), and daughter, and dreams of making enough money to build a small house for his family. Durai and Jayaram share a special bond, as they understand each other well.

On his way to see his family, Jayaram dies in an accident, and Durai goes to his village with the body. There he finds that Jayaram’s family needs his help, and out of sympathy, he decides to settle there and build a small house according to his friend’s last wish. There he comes across a local landlord Vijayan (Vijayan), who cheats the illiterate villagers by giving them loans and later taking over their property. Then there is a tea shop owner Vasantha (Ramya Krishnan), on whom the entire men folk lust. But she is hardworking, and at the same time foul-mouthed and a terror. Vasantha’s brother, who is in love with Vijayan’s daughter, starts the fight between the Vijayan and Durai. Durai works hard to make a house for Mallika, and when the villagers suspect his good intentions, he proves to them that he has a sisterly affection towards her, as he has a soft corner for Vasantha. As the fight goes on for Durai and Vijayan, Vijayan destroys the house that Durai built for his friends. Of this anger, he tries to get revenge. How Durai wins over the villagers and fights against injustice against Vijayan and his son forms the rest of the story.

Karthik not knowing what Malar looks like decides to take a look at her. When he sees Malar he falls in love at first sight, he then tries to reconcile with Malar, but Malar is not willing to forgive a flirt like Karthik. Vaanavaraayan (Rajinikanth) is a feudal chieftain, adored and respected by the people of his village. He lives with his grandparents (M. N. Nambiar & Manorama). Following his advice, they abstain from voting in the elections and instead, pool the money given by the candidates to get themselves some basic amenities. Vallavaraayan (Napoleon) is his arch enemy. Their enmity is further sharpened when Vaanavaraayan wins the hand of Vaitheeswari (Meena), whom Vallavaraayan had also wished to wed. Vallavaraayan then convinces the priest of the village temple to mix poison in the holy water that Vaitheeswari drinks. As a result, she becomes incapable of conceiving a baby. Ganga (Jyothika) lives in a village and secures state second rank in XII board exams. Murugan (Vikram Prabhu) is Pandi’s assistant, and he gives the media an advertisement in which he persuades people to buy land from ‘his’ company, making many people persuaded from it. A billionaire wants to buy all the land, and when he is about the to sign the papers, they find out the land is actually a graveyard, causing the billionaire to not buy the land. When they are in the bar drinking alcohol, a call comes on Pandi’s phone. Murugan answers it, thinking it was the broker who sold them the land, but it was actually Varadhan. Murugan talks to Varadhan in foul language, and when he ends the call, Pandi tells him it was actually Varadhan. He then goes to another table and asks a man for some wine. The whole group befriends the man, who is mute.
