Shiva and Aishwarya are college students and they fall in love with each other. Shiva is from a middle-class family, while Aishwarya is the daughter of the heartless ganglord Natarajan. Natarajan is hell-bent to save his family’s prestige so he is against love marriage.

Mistaking Krishna for influencing Aravindh, Ramya locks horns with him.

Then, it shows Chandramouli waiting in traffic with a green Premier Padmini. He arrives at his son Raghav’s boxing match, and they argue about the car. Afterward, we learn about Madhu, Raghav’s girlfriend, and a flashback reveals that they met after Chandramouli accidentally hit the back of Madhu’s Vespa. Later on, there has been a series of crimes involving GoCab drivers, and Vinayak cannot sponsor Raghav for the state championships, so he decides to go to Azhagar for a sponsorship. He goes on to win the state championships, and the prize is a Suzuki Baleno. Chandramouli asks Raghav to go for a drive with him, to which he agrees. During the drive, their Padmini gets in an accident with a lorry, and Pugazhendhi, Azhagar’s assistant, beats Chandramouli to death. Raghav later wakes up in a hospital, and learns that due to the accident, he can only see two feet in front of him, and also learns that his father is dead. A couple weeks later, Raghav receives a death certificate for a person called Bairavi. We later learn in a flashback that she and Chandramouli were close friends, and that she was killed by Pugazh and his men. The rest of the story is about how Raghav finds out why they killed Bairavi and Chandramouli.

He happens to see a rich girl (Roshini) in there, right after his uncle tells him that “Abirami will come”. He decides that she is the one, and in the confusion following the robbery, he takes her with him to a lonely, damaged house situated at the top of a hill in Kodaikanal. Police start investigation regarding the robbery and missing of Roshini. Initially, Roshini hates him for his weird nature and for holding her captive.

Newly married couple Akhilan (Arya) and Anbarasi (Renuka Menon) shift to their new house in Chennai. They live a happy life, even though their marriage was not love based at first. Soon, Anbarasi’s family came to visit them and left Anbarasi’s sister Kanmani (Akshaya), as she wants to pursue her studies in multimedia. As Kanmani stays with Anbarasi and Akhilan in the same house, she begins to develop feelings for Akhilan. Akhilan does not want to hurt his wife, who has now given birth. He seeks advice from a doctor on how to solve his problem. The doctor tells him to try and marry Kanmani off to her male cousin. Following Akhilan’s advice, Kanmani’s cousin decides to marry Kanmani, but she rejects him. One day, Kanmani’s cousin kidnaps her, rapes her, and leaves her at Akhilan’s apartment. This shocks everyone in the family, especially Akhilan. He admits to Kanmani about his action, and also told that the raping plan was not his advice. The whole family forces Kanmani to marry her cousin. The next morning, Kanmani committed suicide and died. Akhilan and Anbarasi, with their infant, go back to her village. Anbarasi’s aunt hits Kanmani’s husband as she thinks it was because of him Kanmani died. Akhilan, standing right beside him, was guilty because it was he who planned all this to avoid Kanmani disturbing his married life.

When his father is murdered by an unknown gang, Natesan sets out to find the killers. But, he is shocked to learn that his father’s death has a connection with the murder of his childhood friend.

Govindan (Manivannan) is a thief who has two children. Aadhi (Pasupathy) and Mathi (‘Chiyaan’ Vikram). Years go by and the two, Aadhi and Madhi, decide to stop stealing and mend their ways and lead a hardworking life along with their father. They migrate to neighboring village and meet a retired agricultural officer, Chidambaram (Vijaya Kumar) who is in deep debts and is under pressure from the village’s landlord, Kalingarayar (Murali) to clear his debts. In efforts to help Chidambaran, Mathi confronts Seetha Lakshmi (Asin), Kalingarayar’s daughter, who comes to collect the money Chidambaram owes her father. Seetha Lakshmi starts to acquire a liking for Mathi but keeps it hidden due to her father’s atrocious temper. In an attempt to teach Kalingarayar a lesson, Mathi forcibly ties the mangalsutram around Seetha’s neck. Kalingarayar, realizing his daughter’s love for Mathi, comes down to arrange a grand re-marriage between the two. But things go awry when Manicka Vel (Biju Menon), Seetha Lakshmi’s maternal uncle comes to town in an effort to stop the wedding between the two as he has plans of marrying her and wiping her family fortune.

The remaining story tells us how the brother and sister put pressure on Aarya to become a rowdy so that Aarya’s status is equal enough as Kasi’s status so that Aarya can marry Kasi’s sister Deepika. Meanwhile, “Snake” Babu (Vadivelu) is elected the area councillor, and has a few encounters with Dr. Aarya, and one with Deepika. He is the main source of comic relief for the film.

Oru Thalai Raagam is the heart breaking love story of Subhadra and Raja, played by (Roopa) and (Shankar) respectively. They are classmates and their colleagues/classmates include Ravindran, Chandrasekhar, Kailash, Thyagu and others. The day starts for them at the Railway Station, where they all catch the train to the college. Raja sincerely loves Subhadra, but she does not reciprocate as she is an introvert as well as she is afraid of society’s backlash. Moreover, her mother’s character isn’t spoken good by the same people. Even though Subhadra loves Raja, she always tries to insult him whenever opportunity comes, but on the positive side, she sometimes shows her feelings for him as well.
Raja’s life becomes hell as he couldn’t concentrate on his studies and he is not taking care of his health as well as he gets affected by liver jaundice. Raja cuts a sorry figure among his colleagues and all of them want Subhadra to accept Raja’s love. Later Raja’s health deteriorates as he still neglects to have proper food and rest. Finally, college days are over for the batch and Subhadra decides to proclaim her love. She gets in the train and see Raja sitting in the compartment and she happily starts speaking with him saying to accept his love and seek apology for her indifferent behavior, but it was too late as Raja dies during her proclamation.
