Chinnadurai (Major Sundararajan) owns a huge estate that grows and processes tobacco and tea leaves. Ligappa mortally wounds Chinnadurai, and on his death bed he confesses to his son that he was born a twin, abandoned his first wife Rajulakshmi (Puspalatha)and his brother Raman (Kamal Hassan). After his father’s death, he conveys this information to the cook, who tells him he will go to Madras and bring his relatives home. Instead, Samipillai goes to a side show, and hires a married couple Rangamani (Manorama) and Kittu, to pretend to be the lost mother and son. One day the entire gang is in a room, laughing at how they had duped Kalyana and will steal everything. He overhears, and runs to tell the police. They chase after him and throw him off a cliff, observed by Shenbagam, who goes mad. Kalyana’s ghost travels to Madras and confides everything to his brother, Raman. He wants his brother to go home, exact revenge, and take care of Shenbagam…..

Four friends, who are unemployed, are in desperate need of money. When one of them, Azhagu, decides to kidnap his niece for ransom, they land in deep trouble.

The film starts in a courtroom where a woman Janaki (Meena) is fighting for divorce from her husband Pandian (Kamal Haasan). She offers various reasons for wanting a divorce. She has married Pandian against the wishes of her rich father Vishwanathan Iyer (Gemini Ganesan). But she isn’t able to come to terms with living in Pandian’s small house without amenities. Pandian is an assistant dance director with a modest income and is not able to spend much time with the family. All this accumulates and Janaki decides to apply for divorce, which is granted. The court orders that Pandian can meet his daughter Barathi, once a week and this is his only solace. His daughter, however, loves him a lot and doesn’t like the arrangement. Basha (Nassar), Pandian’s Muslim friend who works in a hotel as a chef, advises him to steal his daughter from Janaki. Pandian goes about trying to do as his friend suggests. In doing so, he is discovered; and now he cannot meet her at all. Then Pandian finds out that Vishwanathan Iyer has advertised for a woman to look after his granddaughter. Joseph (Nagesh) is a makeup man in films. In conversation with him, Pandian gets the idea of playing an old woman, so that he can be with his child and ex-wife without knowing them. Joseph agrees to this plan and the transformation is done from Pandian to “Avvai Shanmugi”– (also Kamal Haasan) a dignified, elderly Iyer woman, who is hired to take care of the little girl.

Soon Arumugham is forced by circumstances to fight against an anti-social gang with a lady boss. An honest police officer (Manoj.K.Jayan) tries to collect evidence against the criminal gang. When Arumugham realizes that the bad guys are the henchmen of the same Minister who is behind all the crimes, !

Karan (Shahid Kapoor) is a shy and nerdy canteen boy and college student, running a café with his friend Murugan (Johnny Lever), and Tanya (Rimi Sen) is a student in the same college. She is the most popular girl on campus. Karan is in love with Tanya but is too shy to tell her. After he musters some courage and rescues her step-brother from some goons, he catches her attention and is eventually able to invite her to a fake birthday party. On her way there, Tanya witnesses the murder of a scientist, Khurana (Om Puri) by his evil twin brother, the underworld don Mehboob, and as a result is forced to flee the country to save her own life, since the law had been bought out by the very same killers. The scientist had stored a secret code in a stuffed toy, a parrot, now being sought by Mehboob, and Khurana was able to hide the toy in Tanya’s car before being killed. Unawares, Tanya leaves the toy at home before fleeing the country, and the toy is later picked up by Karan, ignorant of Tanya’s fate.

He is then sent to a juvenile home, where he tells his story to one of the wardens, who is soft-hearted towards him.
Through flashbacks, we see how Kaathu and Arasi first met. Both are still teenagers from the slums but they do not go to school but are forced to work to help support their respective families. Arasi works as a maid at wealthy families’ homes while Kaathu does odd jobs for a living. One day, while her employers are away, Arasi invites Kaathu into the house where they (impulsively) make love. However, Arasi quickly regrets and pushes Kaathu away, who leaves upset.

Tamizh is a visually-impaired young man who works as a singer for an entertainment troupe. During one of the weddings he performs at, he meets Sudhanthirakodi, a young woman who is studying to become a teacher and is also visually-impaired. Tamizh teases her, causing her to leave him waiting for her as she presents her wedding gift to the newlyweds and leaves. The following day, he bumps into her on the train and asks his friend to mislead her into getting down at a wrong station. As a result, Kodi is late for her first day of teaching practice. She and her friends then go after whoever who tricked her. The next time he gets on the train, Tamizh candidly talks to his friend about how they played a prank on Kodi the other day, not realizing she is right in front of him. Angered, she hits him with her walking stick, causing him to bleed. Tamizh is embarrassed and is angry when his friends tease him about the incident. However, Kodi feels bad for what she did and apologizes to him the next time they meet. As their friendship grows deeper, Tamizh falls in love with Kodi. With the help of his friends, he composes a romantic poem for her which he records in a CD. When he goes to meet her at her school, he slips the CD into her bag, only to learn from her best friend that Kodi dreams of marrying a person who can see. She has always hoped that Vinod, the young man who volunteers reading to her at the service center will propose to her. On that very day, Vinod takes Kodi out for lunch to show her a surprise. Thinking that he is going to propose, she happily follows. However, she is heartbroken when Vinod introduces her to his fiancé, who plans to make Kodi her charity case. When she returns home, she is surprised to find Tamizh’s CD and is touched when she listens to it. Later, Tamizh goes through much difficulty to find Kodi’s favourite clock with her late father’s voice recording as the alarm. Realizing how much Tamizh is in love with her, Kodi finally learns to love him back. However, her greedy elder brother had promised to marry her off to someone else in return for a favour, forcing her and Tamizh to elope. Tamizh manages to obtain enough money to pay off Kodi’s brother, but he is tricked by a group of corrupt policemen before being hit by an oncoming van. Unknown to him, Kodi is also in the van on the way to meet him. As they are both silent throughout the journey, neither of them realize the other is also in the van. When Tamizh has finally recovered from the accident, he finds that Kodi has left Chennai to stay away from her brother’s family. After a period of time, a reporter friend tells him Kodi was seen in Mumbai. Tamizh goes to the city in search of his one true love and they are finally united.

Marupadiyum is an emotional and psychological drama that focuses on the central female protagonist, a wife caught up in marital discord played by Revathi and her life henceforth.
