Amarkant Varma (Shahrukh Khan) is a program executive for All India Radio, dispatched from New Delhi to cover festivities in Assam. On his way there, during a rainy night, Amar stops at Haflong train station to catch the Barak Valley Express. As he waits, he tries to have a smoke and asks a mysterious person for either a match or a lighter. Suddenly a strong gust of wind blows the shawl off the person, revealing it to be woman (Manisha Koirala). Amar finds her very attractive and tries to strike up a conversation, but she ignores him for a bit and then asks him for a cup of tea. When he returns with the tea, he watches as she boards the next train with three male passengers and rides off into the distance.

Shiva and Athulya try to make their long-distance relationship work. However, Athulya’s colleague Karthik develops feelings for her, which complicates the bond between them.

Raja, an introvert medical student falls in love with his fellow college mate, Geeta, but does not have courage to express his love to her. When he decides to convey his love, then he misunderstands that Geeta is in love with someone else but in fact she was helping her sister and her lover to unite. Her father does not accept her sister’s love and the pair commit suicide.
Towards the end of the final year of college, he finally conveys his love to Geetha when she is in the college mourning her sister’s death. On the last day of college, Raja comes to know that the Geetha is about to be engaged soon to someone else, he couldn’t cope with the news and suffers a mild heart stroke and gets hospitalized. In the mean time Geetha starts falling in love with Raja, she visits the hospital to express her love only to find Raja has left to catch a train to his native village. She rushes to the railway station and searches for him, she finds her father on the way and her father accepts her love, she finds Raja’s friend Chinni instead and will come to know of Raja’s heart condition that he cannot digest a very happy or sad news. Chinni urges Geetha not to meet Raja then and promises after Raja recuperates, he will unite them. The film ends as Geetha looks at the departing train.

Sekar, a thief taking refuge by working on a farm, falls in love with Anjali, a local girl. When Anjali’s parents discover that he is a thief, they discourage her from continuing the relationship. On the night before Sekar and Anjali’s marriage, Sekar’s criminal cronies intoxicate him in order to sell Anjali into slavery. Sekar looks for Anjali, eventually finding the place where she was sold, and kills a woman working in the slavery business. Meanwhile, Anjali is injured by slave traders as she is thrown from a car when the drivers learn of the woman’s murder by Sekar. While hospitalized, Anjali is killed by her father who fears unwanted media attention. Sekar reaches the hospital and learns about the death of Anjali.[citation needed]
