Chandru (Prashanth) works in a flower shop owned by Manivannan. He tries to woo girls and enter into a relationship, but it does not materialize. His friends (Charle and Vaiyapuri) tease him for being unable to find a girlfriend. Chandru has a plan to prevent them making fun of him. He requests his close friend Gayathri (Sujitha) to come to the temple along with some of her friends so he would introduce her as his girlfriend to his friends. Chandru takes his friends with him to temple with plans of introducing Gayatri’s friend as his lover. Unfortunately, Gayatri does not turn up that day, and Chandru simply points out a girl (Preeti Jhangiani) among the crowd in the temple as his lover to his friends. Chandru pretends as if he is talking frequently over phone to his lover so that his friends would believe him.

Rasu Padayachi (Mammootty) is the chief of his village Gunavasal, he is a kind-hearted person who is highly respected by the villagers, he is so respected that the people even erect his statue in the village. Rasu Padayachi has dedicated his life for the welfare of the village people. When the Muslim peoples of the surrounding villages wanted to buy one of his lands to build a Mosque there, Rasu Padayachi refuses their money and he gives them his land for free.
In the village Sundarapuram, Manimaran (Ranjith) is a respected village chief who lives with his parents (M. N. Rajam and K. K. Soundar). Manimaran and his cousin Mannaru (Mansoor Ali Khan) are known for being short-tempered persons.

The film begins with the young man Sakthivel (Ranjith) coming back to his village. At his return, he is respected and treated as God by the villagers, they call him Thirukkaval. Thirukkaval still hates his father Chettiar (Jaishankar), stepmother Azhamu (Kavitha), stepbrother and stepsister. The kind-hearted Thirukkaval quickly makes enemies including Munnumunuthan (Vasu Vikram), Kodumudi (Kazan Khan) and his father Chettiar. Meanwhile, Pasupathy (Ravi Shankar) and Chinna Pulla (Rajakumari) fall in love with each other. The affair is soon exposed, so Thirukkaval arranges their wedding. Shortly after, Pasupathy dies in an accident and the villagers blame the innocent Thirukkaval.
In the past, Thirukkaval lived happily with his father Chettiar, his mother Shenbaga Valli and his baby sister Chittu. Chettiar had an affair with Shenbaga Valli’s sister Azhamu and Azhamu became pregnant. Unable to bear the situation, Shenbaga Valli killed her baby daughter and committed suicide. The angry Thirukkaval injured his father’s foot and run away. He then became a child labourer to make a living.
Chinna Pulla’s mother Appayi (Manorama) passes away. Thereafter, Thirukkaval is accused of having an affair with the widow Chinna Pulla. What transpires next forms the rest of the story.

He fights against a few thugs and hands them over to police constable Daas (Vivek) following which Daas is promoted to sub-inspector. Pasupathy accompanies Das and his team most of the time. Pasupathy’s mother is diagnosed with a heart problem and he is need of 500,000 rupees for the surgery. Pasupathy tries in vain to collect money with the help of Daas and Priya (Sindhu Tolani).
