Krishnaswamy (Kamal Haasan) is a widower living happily along with his mother-in-law Saraswathi (S. N. Lakshmi), daughter Kaveri (Mahanadi Shobana) and son Bharani (Mahanadhi Dinesh) in a village near Trichy. Dhanush (Cochin Haneefa), a con from the city, has an eye on Krishna’s prosperity and asks him to join his chit fund business. At first, Krishna is reluctant; however, when a rich friend from a foreign country visits his house, he too wants to be rich like them. Hence he agrees to Dhanush’s proposal and arrives at the city. However, he is unaware of Dhanush’s tricks and when Dhanush swindles away the chit fund money, the blame is put on Krishna, and he lands up in jail. He finds that even his future father-in-law Panjapakesan (Poornam Viswanathan) is also in jail for the same reason, whose daughter is Yamuna (Sukanya), working as a nurse. He advises Krishna not to be angry if the jailor is cruel, as he might be released sooner if he is submissive in the jail. During Krishna’s tenure in jail, Yamuna takes care of his family. Due to unavoidable situations, his mother-in-law dies and his children go missing. Krishna learns this after coming out from jail suffering unnecessary hardships.

Sakthivel (Ajith Kumar) is an implicitly obedient son of a sincere policeman Rajarajan (Rajkiran). Sakthi and his father share the same dream: that of seeing him enter the police force. One thing leads to another, and Sakthi is unwittingly sucked into the unholy vortex. Just as he is about to join the police force, destiny decrees otherwise: his life is not going to be the same again. A father’s dream lies shattered while a son, despite his unwillingness, has to fight an honest war beyond the matrix of a law. It is a situation that is actually an emotional cauldron. How the father and son reconcile to the new reality is the story.

The film features Captain Vijayakanth in the role of a bank officer named Mahendran who is transferred to the branch of Village Nilakottai to sort out the perplexing situation of bank fraud carried on by a big shot Marthandan (Debutant Ramki). The story begins with Kunjidhapadam (Aravindan) who comes from a small place to the city for an interview and he manages to find place to stay with his distant relative Subramanyam who is actually a defaulter on loans taken on interest. He is absconding but then leaves his key at a secret place. Kunjidhapadam takes the key and stays and he also manages to get a job. On the other hand, there is Angel (Charmy Kaur) who grows as an orphan and works with a mineral water company. She doesn’t have a place to stay so she locates those houses without occupants and stays there for a night and gets going in the morning. One such instance gets her to Kunjidhapadam’s house. All this apart, there are two dons Pavadai (Kota Srinivasa Rao) and Vembuli (Jayaprakash) who are out to kill each other and Vembuli is successful in killing Pavadai’s son. So he vows to kill Vembuli’s son by the 12th day ceremony of his son. A twist of fate occurs and Pavadai’s goons mistake Kunjidhapadam to be Subrahmanyam and get him to take money. Kunjidhapadam gives an idea to kill Vembuli’s son and he is given a 16-day deadline to kill else Pavadai threatens to kill him
