Young Jeeva (Silambarasan) is the grandson of Seema of Theni. When she was five years old, she kills five persons and goes to jail. She comes out of prison turning nastier than before. She is now a hard-core ‘dada’ and she is feared as well as revered by people in her place, Theni, where she is engaged in all activities which the law forbids. The local police throw up their hands. A police officer, also named Jeeva (Lal), comes down heavily on Seema with all his might and cunningness and finally burns her alive. Meanwhile, a rowdy, also named Jeeva, becomes a thorn in the flesh of police officer Jeeva and he is after his daughter Vedika, who loves Seema’s grandson, a tough guy in the college. While Vedika wants to keep the rowdy off her with the help of Seema’s grandson, he wants to take revenge on her father for killing his grandmother. The film begins with Gaythri (Sneha) getting married to an irrigation engineer (Vikramaditya) against her wishes. As she conducts her marriage with mechanical unconsciousness, her sunken heart reflects her past. Gayathri, a marine student, goes to Rameswaram to study coral reefs and marine ecosystems while staying with her uncle (Vinu Chakravarthy) in a fisherman hamlet. She witnesses Chinna (Arjun) and his assistants (Mansoor Ali Khan and Ponnambalam) – local mobsters working for a gang – committing pitiless and violent crimes. Though she wanted to report these crimes to the local SP (Vijayakumar), her uncle dissuades her. Meanwhile, she asks her uncle for a guide to take her to locations rich in marine life. Her uncle directs Chinna to help Gayathri in her pursuit. After a couple of close encounters with Chinna, Gayathri understands his soft nature and vows to reform him as a socially acceptable man. Later, love blossoms between them. Even as Chinna tries to make his life straight, a violent feud ensues between him and the local gang. Trying to save Gayathri, Chinna kills the gang leader and is sentenced to life imprisonment. Taking advantage of Chinna’s absence, Gayathri’s parents marry her to the irrigation engineer. As the story ploughs through in the second half, Chinna, characterized by the obsession with “Gayathri”, kills people working against his goal to attain his ladylove. At the end, after much drama, when Chinna almost killed Gayathri’s husband, she shot him in order to save her husband. Chinna asked her if she had feelings for him before this, at least for a second. Just after she shook her head saying yes, he jumped off the building. The movie ends there indicating his death.

Anbu (Vishal) is a happy-go-lucky engineering student who lives with his family in Pattukottai and has fun with his friends. One day, he gets into a fracas with a local politician (Dhandapani) and his comic henchmen while trying to save a friend, and is arrested and has a case registered against him. The local court gives him conditional bail, provided that he signs the register in a Trichy police station. On the way to the police station, he sees a girl on a terrace (Motta Madi) drying clothes and falls for her. It is love at first sight for Anbu as he becomes crazy about Malar (Priyamani), a college girl, which leads to some hilarious situations. The police station, where he has to sign daily, is manned by his uncle Kandasamy (Ashish Vidyarthi), a comic inspector whose ex-lover Kamala (Urvasi) is the constable at the station. Anbu kindles his uncle’s love life and makes merry at Malar’s college, leading to funny situations. Meanwhile, Trichy is run by a powerful politician Palani (Devaraj) and his brother Guna (Ajay), who have killed the local RDO in cold blood, watched by a huge crowd of onlookers. The brothers continue with their ‘dadagiri’ until they clash with Anbu. The reason is that while trying to save Malar from a situation with Palani, Anbu ends up getting the wrath of the brothers. Although Malar’s mother wants to move away from the city, Anbu and his aunt convince her to stay and make Anbu Malar’s protector. He accompanies her and protects her from danger. After seeing his care, Malar slowly falls for Anbu and sees his true love for her. Palani causes problems for Anbu, but Anbu overcomes them and gets Palani killed by Kandasamy. Malar graduates and marries Anbu, and the story ends.
Lingaa 2014
A dam in the village of Solaiyur, which is the lifeline of that village is under assessment for structural integrity by the Public Works Department. The dam inspector (Ponvannan) assesses that the dam is still strong 75 years after it was built. Later that evening, he is hanged to death by the corrupt local MP Nagabhushan (Jagapathi Babu), who wants the dam destroyed for his own benefit. The dying dam inspector throws a pen drive containing details about the proposed plan to destroy the dam into an abandoned Shiva temple near the dam and warns the village head Karunakara (K. Viswanath) that the temple has to be opened as soon as possible, after which he passes away. Karunakara and the villagers are of the opinion that the temple can only be opened by the descendant of Raja Lingeswaran (Rajnikanth), who built the dam as well as the Shiva temple. Lakshmi (Anushka Shetty), the granddaughter of Karunakara and a television journalist, goes on a search to find the Raja’s descendant. She soon manages to find the descendant, whose name is Lingeswaran aka Lingaa (Rajnikanth). Lingaa is the grandson of Raja Lingeswaran, but is a petty thief with his family having now fallen on hard times. He holds a grudge against his grandfather, feeling that he had brought down his family into poverty by squandering all his wealth and hence refuses to go with Lakshmi to Solaiyur. However, Lakshmi implicates Lingaa in a robbery, as a result of which the police pursue Lingaa. Lingaa is forced to accept Lakshmi’s invitation to avoid getting caught and travels with her to Solaiyur.

Siva (R. Madhavan) is based out of Srirangam and he comes to Chennai to join a college. He stays with his sister (Anu Hasan) and her husband (Raghuvaran). Siva does not like his brother-in-law and never talks to him, despite several attempts made by his sister to convince both.
Siva meets Priya (Meera Jasmine) during a bus journey, and it is love at first sight for him. He again meets her on a few more occasions and proposes his love, but she warns him to stop following her despite liking him. Siva understands that Priya’s brother Bhaskar (Atul Kulkarni) is a local goon, and he attacks anyone who follows his sister.
