Kaaliyan and Jaishankar are like dictators in neighboring villages separately, but in contrast to Kaaliyan, Jaishankar is selfish and bad. Engagement of Jaishankar’s sister with Kaaliyan triggers rivalry between the two villages.

The film is an emotional action thriller which is based on friendship between two boys who work in a wine shop.

Vasanthi (Bhavana) is the daughter of a man (Lal) who does a lot of help for the refugees. She instantly falls for Jeevan (Jiiva), a Tamil refugee staying in the camp in Rameswaram. Jeevan, nurturing a dream to go back to his homeland, keeps on discouraging the girl, who is stubborn in her love. Jeevan’s heart, influenced by the pure love of the girl, starts melting slowly. Enters Vasanthi’s cousin (Bose Venkat), who is full of dreams on marrying her. He joins as an inspector in the local police station. The whole family is eagerly awaiting their marriage. Problems arise when the family comes to know about the love. Vasanthi’s cousin and his uncle try to eliminate Jeevan. They keep on troubling him, without much success. Meanwhile, the refugees get a chance to go back, and Jeevan has to go with them. He promises Vasanthi that he would come back to marry her. The family is determined to stop him. Vasanthi decides to end her life if Jeevan does not turn up.

JK, a CID officer, is forced to take up a case while on a lookout for his own sister who is missing. While investigating, he realises there is more to the case and goes on to unveil the mystery.

Arun, on the other hand, comes from a wealthy family, drives his own car, studies in Loyala College, and is also the Captain of his football team. After a football game, both become good friends. Arun tells Rajesh that he is in love with a girl, while Rajesh also tells him that he too has a girlfriend. Both do not know that they love the same girl, Divya. A mridangam maker’s son, who aspires to learn the instrument from a maestro and become a mridangam player, has to cross social and personal barriers to reach his goal.

The beginning of the film is set in 1951 in a small village of Idar in Sabarkantha district, northern Gujarat, where a young man named Gurukant “Guru” Desai (Abhishek Bachchan) dreams of making it big someday. His father (Rajendra Gupta), the headmaster of the village school, tells him not to dream and that dreams never come true. Gurukant decides to go to Turkey and enter the spice trade; later, he is promoted but refuses the job, as he wants to work for himself. Back in his village, he marries Sujata (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), mainly because of the dowry she brings him. Along with Sujata and her brother Jignesh (Arya Babbar), Guru migrates to Bombay and starts trading in cloth. Gradually, he expands his business and sets up manufacturing units of his own, under the name “Shakti Corporation”.

Saroja is born in a very poor family and is raised by her mother. However, in order to raise her children, Saroja’s mother resorts to prostitution.

Thenali Soman (Kamal Haasan) is a Sri Lankan Tamil who has come to Chennai for psychiatric treatment because of numerous phobias caused by his trauma of the Sri Lankan Civil War. Kailash tells Thenali to wait until after the vacation before his therapy can begin, but Panchabhootham asks for Thenali to go meet Kailash while on vacation.

With much difficulty he enrolls Haridas in a normal school where Amudhavalli (Sneha) is a teacher specialized to deal with special children.
