Sakthi (played by Sandeep) is the only son of Sharath Babu and Bhanupriya. Having tired of urban living, the elderly couple takes up residence in a village along with their son. Viswanathan (Madhu) is the head of the village. He is highly respected for his fairness and for his love and compassion for the poor. His granddaughter (played by Roopa) is a village belle. She catches Sakthi’s attention as she flits around the village like a butterfly. The two are drawn towards each other and eventually fall in love. Their affair has the tacit blessings of Viswanathan. But it is not going to be a bed of roses for the two as trouble brews up in the person of Sakthi’s ex-flame, city-bred glamour girl played by Shubha Punja.

Agent Wali Khan (Irrfan Khan), appointed by the Chief of Indian intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), Ashwini Rao (Nassar), has been on a mission for nine years to keep an eye out for the activities of India’s most wanted D-Company leader, Goldman (Rishi Kapoor) while working as a local barber as a cover. One day he notices Goldman talking about his son’s wedding cards to people in the mosque where he prays and comes to know that his son is getting married and Goldman is breaking his security protocol to attend that. The same is confirmed by an ISI operative who works part-time as Goldman’s bodyguard and is a neighbor and friend of Wali though he doesn’t know the truth about Wali’s connections to Indian Intelligence. Sensing a chance to nab Goldman alive, he informs Ashwini about the same who assembles a team quickly – Ex-Indian Army officer and mercenary, Rudra Pratap Singh (Arjun Rampal), RAW’s explosives expert, Zoya Rehman (Huma Qureshi), and Aslam, a Mumbai thief and a murderer who was given a chance at freedom by participating in this mission.

Jaggubhai returns to India as a dejected officer, failing in his official duty and personal life. Fate had something in store for him. 20 years later, or as he says it 21 years later, he gets a call from Australia stating Ilavarasi is dead and has left him a will. He reaches Australia and is shocked to know the brief encounter with Ilavarasi had resulted in a daughter Monisha (Shriya Saran), now a teenager.
