Amavasai helps Mani with some petty tasks during election campaign and meetings. Amavasai grows into a well acclaimed helper and first associate for Mani. Meanwhile, Amavasai falls in love with Thayamma (Kasthuri) and one day he gives her some drug making her groggy and then rapes her. Mani instructs Amavasai to stand for MLA election as independent candidate in the upcoming general election with his support as Mani was not given his party ticket. Amavasai wins by a huge margin and becomes the MLA. He forgets his relationship with Thayamma and rejects her pregnancy and child. Thayamma and her parents move out of that village to avoid humiliation. Soon Thayamma gives birth to a boy and dies. Amavasai forgets Mani’s help and forces him in a role under him. He changes his name to Nagaraja Cholan for gaining social status. He marries the only daughter of the rich local landlord, Sivakami (Sujatha) and even cheats him of his palace. Over the years, Amavasai grows into a highly influential and corrupt politician with high criminal affluence. He builds a strong political empire through shortcuts. His ego and pride to remain in power make him kill many. He wins and remains as MLA of Palladam in all the general elections for next 20 years.
Now, Amavasai’s son Thangavel (also Sathyaraj) through Thayamma comes out as a new police constable, who is deputed in Amavasai’s constituency. The film opens with the ageing gangster, Singaperumal, forcing himself on a young girl, Subbu. He is unable to perform, and vents his anger by slapping the helpless Subbu. Singaperumal is the grand don of crime in Madras. His lieutenant, Pasupathi, brings a proposal. A large stash of cocaine, worth about ₹ 2 crore, has entered the city. The guy bringing the stash wants to sell it for ₹ 50 lakh. Pasupathi sees the immediate easy profit, as well as the long term benefit (to control the cocaine market with such a large supply) and the recognition that they are able to pull off such a deal. The drawback is that the stash really belongs to their arch-rival Gajendran. Singaperumal knows that Gajendran is a vicious and unpredictable adversary, and the venture is risky and likely to become messy. He decides to pass. Pasupathi dourly suggests Singaperumal is getting old and rusty. He asks Singaperumal to loan him the ₹ 50 lakh so he can do the job himself. Pasupathi is prepared to face the risks, and in return for the loan, he offers Singaperumal a cut of the profits. Singaperumal agrees to the loan, but, instead asks Pasupathi to first get the stash and then think of the profit distribution. The money for the loan is brought to Singaperumal.
Moothavan 2022
The Elder One concerns itself with an arduous quest to find a missing relative. But this tale of two siblings, who each leave home for their own reasons, expands the scope of Mohandas’ already-generous sense of the diversity of the Indian experience. Stealing a small and hardly seaworthy fishing boat, 14-year-old Mulla flees the sleepy, idyllic island of Lakshadweep for the crowded bustle of Mumbai. Akbar, Mulla’s elder brother, left for the city some years before, and Mulla – with only a phone number to rely on – is convinced the two can reunite there. But upon arrival, Mulla immediately falls in with a gang of criminal orphans, receiving a crash course in survival skills for Mumbai’s criminal underground. In the midst of Mulla’s story, Mohandas takes us back to the days leading up to Akbar’s departure from Lakshadweep, when he met mute Ameer sent to the island for an unwanted arranged marriage. Their gay affection will alter the course of both of their lives. Alternating between scenes of bracing violence and heartbreaking tenderness, The Elder One is an epic story of familial bonds and underworld misadventure, infused with urgent questions regarding gender, sexuality, and tolerance. Mohandas presents us with an unsparing vision of Mumbai as a place of decadence and ruthlessness, while ensuring that, with enough love, tenacity, and courage, any place could be called home.
