Murphy “Barfi” Johnson (Ranbir Kapoor) is an optimistic , street-wise, charming young man who was born deaf to a Nepali couple in Darjeeling. His mother died when he was a baby and his father raised him alone while working as a chauffeur. Barfi is known as a troublemaker – he cuts lampposts, plays practical jokes on innocent people, and is chased by Sudhanshu Dutta (Saurabh Shukla), a local police officer. Barfi meets Shruti Ghosh (Ileana D’Cruz), who has just arrived in Darjeeling; she is engaged to Ranjeet Sengupta (Jisshu Sengupta) and is due to get married in three months, and Barfi is immediately smitten with Shruti. She also falls in love with Barfi but her mother dissuades her from pursuing him because he could not take care of her with his disabilities and lack of money. Shruti takes her mother’s advice, gets married, and moves to Kolkata, breaking all contact with Barfi.

The plot revolves around two fathers and their sons. GK (Raghuvaran), Dev (Vikram) father, is a smuggler who lives in a house near by Thangiah S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, father of Guru (Ajith Kumar). In his childhood days, Guru got attracted by GK’s activities and follows his footsteps. While Thangiah tries to convince his son, it is all in vain. He got vexed and started to raise Dev (GK’s son), as a good man. In their college days, Dev becomes a singer. With the lover boy image, he is really popular among the ladies in the college. While Guru studying in the same college becomes a dancer and turns out to be a local dada, who helps GK in his business. Both Guru and Dev fall in love with the same girl Megha (Maheswari). Who is in love with Guru. Thangiah comes to know about Dev’s love for her and begs Guru to leave his love for Dev, since he won’t be able to lead a peaceful life in the shape he is. Despite Guru having thoughts of leaving Megha. Dev steps aside knowing that Megha in love with Guru. As Dev hides his feelings for Megha. He wishes the both of them by saying, that the love they have for each other will prevail. The film ends with Guru’s choosing to stay with the dark world and with Megha, by his side.

Vaanavaraayan (Rajinikanth) is a feudal chieftain, adored and respected by the people of his village. He lives with his grandparents (M. N. Nambiar & Manorama). Following his advice, they abstain from voting in the elections and instead, pool the money given by the candidates to get themselves some basic amenities. Vallavaraayan (Napoleon) is his arch enemy. Their enmity is further sharpened when Vaanavaraayan wins the hand of Vaitheeswari (Meena), whom Vallavaraayan had also wished to wed. Vallavaraayan then convinces the priest of the village temple to mix poison in the holy water that Vaitheeswari drinks. As a result, she becomes incapable of conceiving a baby. But surprisingly, Vaitheeswari soon becomes pregnant-though she has pretended with the help of the mid-wife (S. N. Lakshmi), to do so to uphold her husband’s honour. She takes poison and kills herself unable to bear the grief of being incapable of giving her husband a child and on her deathbed makes Vaanavarayan swear to take Ponni (Aishwariya) as his wife. Vaanavarayan however refuses until Ponni agrees to marry Sembattai (Thalapathi Dinesh)- Vallavarayan’s hechman-who abandons her to Vallavarayan’s vice. Infuriated, Vaanavarayan attacks Vallavarayan and spares his life after giving him a sermon on how to win the heart of the people.
