The film starts with Thamizharasan (Sathyaraj), a reformist who enters a village with the intention to unite a couple and help a young girl Sandhya (Madhumitha), who aspires to be a singer. Bala (Siva Balaji) is in love with Sandhya. There, Thamizharasan faces the anger of Sandhya’s father (Dhandapani), a strong believer of older ideologies. Sandhya hates Thamizharasan, and the reason for that is told in a flashback, which starts with Thamizharasan’s wife Maheswari (Namitha) aspiring to be a sports champion. Thamizharasan motivates and helps her. Due to some family problems, Maheswari commits suicide after making her husband promise to help her sister to become a popular singer. Manimaran falls in love with Vaidehi (Devayani), a Brahmin girl, and gets married to her without her permission. In a fight against Manimaran, the antagonist becomes blind in one eye and decides to take revenge on Manimaran. When Manimaran drives his pregnant sister, the antagonist stops him but Manimaran beats the antagonist and his henchmen. Uma comes too late at the hospital and dies with her baby. Vaidehi leaves their house because of her husband’s behaviour who brings Uma’s death. Manimaran changes his behaviour and tries to convince Vaidehi to come back home.

The movie begins with the marriage of John (Arya) and Regina (Nayantara) at a church. The marriage is an arranged one, to which both have consented reluctantly to make their parents happy. After the marriage they live together as strangers in an apartment, where the neighbors are upset with John who comes home drunk every night, which he does deliberately to annoy Regina. Eventually, Regina applies for a transfer to Australia to stay away from John.
