Feisty college student Indhu spends a lot of time with Pattasu and his friends. However, a fight between them and a local ruffian gets Indhu thrown out of college. To make matters worse, her malevolent uncle tries to force her into prostitution.

Vasu (Ajith) is a ruthless rowdy who lives in a cinema theater owned by Vinu Chakravarthy. He had a tortured childhood and wastes his days by drinking, fighting, and sleeping. It all starts when Vasu’s friend Dhamu loses an Annamalai movie reel to Mohana (Shalini). Vasu and Mohana clash when he attempts to retrieve the reel. Mohana’s family are members of the police, headed by Birla Bose (Nasser), Mohana’s father. At this point, Tulasi Das (Raghuvaran), an ex-mafia “dada” who spent many years in jail because of Bose, comes to the theater. He does not like Bose and hires Vasu to kidnap Mohana. He cries out his woes in the song “Satham Illatha.” Mohana falls in love with him after hearing his pain. When Tulasi realizes Mohana loves Vasu, he hires Vasu to pretend he loves her back. At first it is just pretend, but then he too begins to love her. Tulasi visits Bose to inform him of his daughter’s love for a gangster and realizes Mohana is indeed his daughter. A flashback showing the parted friendship between the two men, and Ganga (Raadhika), Tulasi’s wife, abandons him and their child when she comes to know her husband is a don. Knowing Mohana is his daughter, Tulasi instructs Vasu to give up his love. When Vasu refuses, Tulasi visits Mohana and tells her about his ploy and that Vasu’s love for her was fake. Eventually, Vasu proves to Mohana his love was true and unites with her after a clash between the cops and some goons of the locality.

Karuthayya (Murali) and Peter (Manoj Bharathiraja) are the best of friends, sharing with each other their hopes and dreams. Karuthayya’s plan to get his beloved sister Kayal (Umashankari) married elsewhere is thwarted when he learns that she is in love with Peter. He hears this from Uppili (Pratyusha), who has a soft corner for Karuthayya and vice versa. For his sister’s sake, Karuthayya approaches Peter with the marriage proposal. A shocked Peter, who had all along shared an easy relationship with Kayal, consents for the sake of friendship. Peter then makes a counter proposal that Karuthayya marry his sister Maria. Peter however withholds the fact that Maria had been seduced by a man from the city and was carrying his child. Family honor being uppermost in his mind, friendship takes a back seat. But Peter does not know that Karuthayya was already aware of his sister’s affair, though not of her pregnancy. Karuthayya, knowing his friend’s aggressive nature, had not told Peter about the matter earlier. Karuthayya now throws the ball back in Peter’s court, asking him to first get Maria’s consent. Sure that Maria would not give her consent for the marriage. But to his shock Maria agrees.
Forced by her mother and Peter to toe the line, she had no other option. The two pairs get married. While Peter and Kayal are blissfully happy, Karuthayya and Maria have their own crosses to bear. A guilt-stricken Maria finally confesses to Karuthayya about Peter’s treacherous act. A shocked and hurt Karuthayya goes to confront Peter. The man from the city appears on the scene. A furious Peter takes the unsuspecting youth on a boat ride, ties a stone on him, and dumps him into the sea. Karuthayya, who reaches the place, tries to save the guy.

From a small rural village, Eashwaran (Srikanth) heads to the bigger city of Chennai with his father (Murali), seeking medicine to treat an illness. An unnamed man (Naseeruddin Shah) carries a travel bag, assumed to contain explosives, in the Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station and proceeds to hide the bag in the restroom of a police station opposite to the Mumbai Police headquarters. He then arrives on the rooftop of a building under construction where he has set up his base of operations, equipped with several sim cards, mobile phones and other electronic gadgets. He calls Rathod and informs him that he has placed five bombs in locations throughout Mumbai and has programmed them to explode simultaneously within four hours unless the Commissioner gives in to his demands and releases four militants. In response, Rathod immediately alerts his team involved in intelligence research and surveillance, tapping all the available resources to trace the location of the caller. Meanwhile, the caller tips off television news reporter Naina Roy (Deepal Shaw), telling her to reach the police headquarters immediately as it is going to be “the most important day of her life”. Rathod initially suspects the anonymous caller is bluffing, but his doubts are dispelled as the caller, to prove his seriousness and the police force’s helplessness, reveals that a bomb has been planted in the Colaba Police Station right across the Police Headquarter. He further scares them by calling the cell phone attached to the bomb but does not detonate the bomb. Just then Roy reaches the scene on the caller’s instructions and reports about the situation.
