The film begins outlining the sour relationship between the two villages, Singampatti and Puliyampatti. Seema Raja (Sivakarthikeyan) is a jobless youth from Singampatti, born in a family with a long lineage of brave people; the main one being King Kadambavel (Sivakarthikeyan). He does good things in the village for likes on Facebook and pays other villagers to treat him with respect. He hangs around with his sidekick/accountant, Kannaku (Soori).
The principal from a nearby school invites Seema Raja’s father (Napoleon) to the awards ceremony at the school. However, due to his father’s busy schedule, Seema Raja offers to go instead. Here, he meets Sunthanthira Selvi, a sports teacher and a Silambam expert and immediately falls in love with her. He then goes around following her, trying to court her.

Based in Kancheepuram, Surya/Arjun makes a living as a con-man on the North Zone, and is assisted by his girlfriend, Baby; while the South side is presided over by Pashupati. When a Kolkata-based contractor hires the latter to kill District Collector Jaianand/Kishan, Surya decides to defend him – this results in his finding out that Jaianand is his look-alike. Ram is introduced to be an youngster who loves graffiti and doesn’t believe in everlasting love. He has gone through 9 loves in his life, and thinks that love between two people eventually dies out. As a person with strong morals, he is honest and wants to love life and live with open mind, open thought and open action with his lover. Jaanu (Genelia D’Souza) studies in the same college as Ram. He falls in love with her at first sight and goes onto wooing her. She eventually ends up falling for him, but wants him to promise to love her forever. Ram, of course, nonchalantly dismisses this and explains how he cannot love her forever. This leads to a clash of their ideologies. Ram shows Jaanu how even true love stales after a while and true love cannot stay forever, while Jaanu shows him examples of everlasting love, like her friends and her parents. However he makes it clear that love between two people is never the same as it first is. Ram doesn’t really bother about feelings of Jaanu and assumes that things work out for him with her because of how he feels for her without genuinely caring about how she feels and wants her future. Ram shows narcissism in most parts of the story.

Senapathi (Prakash Raj), a God fearing boss of a crime family, is on a tour to a temple with his wife Lakshmi (Jayasudha). Despite being escorted by heavily armed men, assassins disguised as cops attempt taking down Sena and Lakshmi, but they evade the assault. His children are notified of this. Sena has a daughter (RJ Sindhu) and three sons: the eldest being Varadan (Arvind Swami), who runs a part of his empire in Chennai. The second, Thyagu (Arun Vijay), operates his business in Dubai with Arabs. The third, Ethi (Silambarasan), runs the Serbian section of Sena’s empire.

Sakthivel (Ajith Kumar) is an implicitly obedient son of a sincere policeman Rajarajan (Rajkiran). Sakthi and his father share the same dream: that of seeing him enter the police force. The entire family comprising 2 other daughters, the mother (Saranya), and a wastrel of a brother-in-law (Vivek) are cuddly and close-knit. Rajarajan is from the old school of life, and honesty is his watchword. In a venal system, this lands him in trouble often. Divya (Trisha Krishnan) is a charming college student. She has some comical run-ins with Sakthi and eventually falls in love with him. Elsewhere, Rajarajan, who books an MLA’s son for an offence, is hauled up over the coals and sent on a ‘punishment transfer’ to a place, which is run as personal fief by a local dada Varadarajan (Ajay). One thing leads to another, and Sakthi is unwittingly sucked into the unholy vortex. Just as he is about to join the police force, destiny decrees otherwise: his life is not going to be the same again. A father’s dream lies shattered while a son, despite his unwillingness, has to fight an honest war beyond the matrix of a law. It is a situation that is actually an emotional cauldron. How the father and son reconcile to the new reality is the story.

Sajan Joseph Alukka (Kunchako Boban) is a soft-spoken and studious young man, while his junior Priyamvada (Meera Jasmine) is smart and outgoing. Her close friend is in love with Sajan, but he avoids her by saying that his only ambition in life is to study hard and become an IAS. But Priya follows him and digs out the truth that though he hails from a rich family, his father has now gone bankrupt and has no money even to pay the exam fee. On hearing this, her friend ditches him. Slowly Priya starts having a soft corner for him. She even pays his fees, but Sajan tries to avoid her and treats this as an insult.
