Sivaji and his siblings toil hard at young age to eke out a living. V. K. Ramasamy helps them out. Sivaji becomes a drama artist. Usha Nandini, daughter of Nambiar who frequently visits his dramas, becomes an ardent fan of Sivaji. While initiating about an alliance for his sister, he faces a financial crunch. He borrows money from Nambiar against a wedding proposal for his brother, Srikanth with Usha. But his brother refuses at the last minute. Usha loves Sivaji and they both get married against Nambiar’s wishes. This creates an enmity between Nambiar and Sivaji. Nambiar and his partner Ramdas, have a business conflict. Ramdas attempts on Sivaji’s life as he tries to help the employees. Whether Sivaji survives or not is the rest of the movie.

Sakthivel (Kamal Haasan) returns home to his father Periya Thevar’s (Sivaji Ganesan) village in Tamil Nadu after completing his education in London. Much to his father’s annoyance, he brings his westernized girlfriend Bhanu (Gautami) with him to meet his family. Periya Thevar is deeply offended since it is a tradition that the family elders choose the youngster’s spouses. To make things worse, Sakthivel reveals his plans on opening a chain of restaurants in Chennai which saddens Periya Thevar as he wanted his son to help the villagers improve their lifestyle with his level of education.

The film commences with friends and family of an ailing village head, Malaichami (Sivaji Ganesan), gathered around him on his death bed. The plot then moves along in a series of flashbacks, featuring significant episodes of the dying man’s life. These include the presence of a boatman’s young daughter Kuyil (Radha) in his village. The protagonist is unhappily married to a shrewish wife by the name of Ponnatha (Vadivukkarasi), and seeks comfort and solace in a friendship with Kuyil. The friendship raises eyebrows, and is socially awkward and complicated for both Malaichami and Kuyil.

This story is about three good-hearted men – Shiva (Sivaji Ganesan), Muthu (Muthuraman) and Nagu (Nagesh) – who become criminals due to unavoidable circumstances. The trio escapes from Central Jail and lands up at Pashupati’s place. Pashupati is a small-time trader. Initially, the three of them intend to loot the money and jewellery from Pashupati’s locker, but as time passes, Pasupathi and his family members’ love and affection towards them changes their heart and the trio becomes part of the family. They start helping Pashupati in all his problems, but constantly fear of being identified and arrested. Will Pashupati and his family ever come to know their true identity? How long will they be able to hide themselves from the police?

Rajasekhar (Sivaji Ganesan) is the loving elder stepbrother of Rajendran (Rajinikanth) and Ramu (Vijaybabu). After his marriage, his wife (Vadivukkarasi) sends his brothers out when he goes to Chennai. Rajendran, the older of the two, toils and becomes a taxi driver to educate and bring up his brother, but his brother strays and gets mixed up with some wrong-doers. He marries a girl Manju (Ramya Krishnan) from a rich family. The girl’s uncle (Jaishankar), is a smuggler who sells drugs using his older brother’s lorries. Jaishankar later kills his brother and puts the blame on Rajendran. Rajasekhar, the presiding judge, realizes that Rajendran is his long-lost brother and returns as a lawyer to save him.

Padayappa is a mechanical engineer who returns to his village from Chennai after three years to attend his sister’s wedding. Padayappa’s great grandfather had decreed all Hindu marriages in their region must take place in the Murugan temple, after the chieftain has verbally confirmed the consent from bride and groom. This tradition has been followed for 100 years and now Padayappa’s father is the chieftain. Padayappa’s younger sister is engaged to their maternal cousin Suryaprakash. During his stay, he comes across Vasundhara, and falls in love with her. However, shyness and fear of Neelambari, her landlady, prevents Vasundhara from initially expressing her feelings. Additionally, Neelambari is Suryaprakash’s spoilt US-returned sister who also loves Padayappa.

Ashwarayapati is a beggar, who is blessed with infinite riches by Devi Maa Lakshmi, so that she can spread the word that Wealth is the best boon for human beings. She is subsequently crowned the Queen of Ashwarayapur. She hears of Vidyapati, meets him, hears him sing, is pleased, attempts to reward him, and also wants him to sing for her in her palace, but he refuses both. Angered, she drives home her horse-driven carriage, almost meets with an accident, but is rescued by Maalya. She then decides to make Maalya her Senapati, and also invites Vidyapati to her palace. Maalya accepts the position, Vidyapati accepts the invitation but humiliates her even more and she has him imprisoned. Little do these three know that their live have seen improvements mainly due to Sage Narad’s mischievous prompting of Devi Maas’ Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Parvati, in a bid to find out who is more powerful of these three. These three mortals must now enter into a conflict and each must do their best to prove whether Knowledge (Saraswati), Wealth (Lakshmi), or Strength (Parvati) reigns supreme.

The film revolves around Lord Murugan, his birth, marriage and his acceptance of the post of the head of the army of heaven. In Hinduism, there are six abodes of lord Muruga, known as the “Arupadaiveedu”. The story behind each of the abodes are portrayed choronologically in the film. It starts with Swamimalai, where Lord Muruga (Master Sridhar) teaches the meaning of the word ‘OM’ to his father, Lord Shiva (Gemini Ganesan). He goes to Palani Hills after a fight over a sacred fruit, that is his second abode. Then he wins over the demon king Surapadman in Thiruchendur and that is his third abode. The King of heaven, Lord Indra offers his Daughter’s hand in appreciation of Lord Muruga’s Victory and he marries her in Thirupparamkunram, his fourth abode. He later marries Valli in his fifth abode of Thiruthani, later after a short dispute between both his wives they amicably settle in Pazhamudircholai, his sixth abode. All the events are summarised by Nakkeerar, a great Tamil Poet portrayed by Sirkazhi Govindarajan at the end of the film.
