She finds that each day some motorists move the concrete blocks that partition the road just to take a quick U-turn and avoid the traffic. They don’t move them back and the blocks are left to lie randomly on the road leading to many accidents. A homeless man sitting on the flyover notes down the vehicle numbers of commuters who violate the rule to take the U-turn and gives the list to Rachana. She obtains the details of the culprits using her contact in the traffic department, with the intention of confronting them for their “short-cut” and writing an article for the paper. Her attempt to meet the first person on the list goes in vain. Later the same day, the police take her into custody and accuse her of killing the same person she wanted to meet. She is shocked and tells her side of the story. Though the senior police officer rejects it, sub-inspector Nayak (Aadhi Pinisetty), finds it believable and does some investigation. It is revealed that all the persons Rachana has on her list have committed suicide. They also noticed that they have committed suicide the same day they took the wrong “u-turn”. Rachana and Nayak find another number has been noted by the homeless man which is to be delivered to Rachana the next day. The duo trace the address and try to rescue the man, a lawyer, who has taken the u-turn on the same day. As nothing seems suspicious, both leave only to encounter the very death of the lawyer whom they came to rescue.

One day, in his rush to grab hold of a falling kite, Ramesh( Adharvaa) bumps into Priya ( Samantha ), a fashion technology student. In the process, her pendrive falls into his pocket, without either of them realising. The pendrive consists of six months’ worth of Priya’s project work, and she needed to submit it. Asking the principal for an extension, Priya searches for Ramesh, and finally manages to find him. She thoroughly humiliates him, while he denies the pendrive is with him. After college one day, Ramesh and his friends see Priya on the road. They tease her and infuriate her, eventually leading to her slapping him. A few days later, while Ramesh’s mother is washing his pants, she finds the pendrive. Ramesh realises the fault is his, and immediately goes to return the pendrive. Priya is impressed with his attitude, as she expected him to keep the pendrive because she slapped him. This marks the beginning of their friendship. As time passes, Priya and Ramesh become closer. Urged by his friends, Ramesh goes to tell Priya that he loves her. However, while asking for money from his friend Kumar ( Karunaas ), he accidentally takes the condom from Kumar’s pocket as well. When Ramesh sees the condom, he tries to hide it from Priya. However, just then, the police arrives, and he is forced to drop it. Priya sees the condom and is shocked. She denies knowing Ramesh, resulting in him being taken to the police station. Ramesh is finally brought home, and refuses to talk to Priya. His friends try to talk to her, but she does not listen. However, when her friend tells her how much Ramesh actually loves her, she is finally convinced. Ramesh had actually bought Priya a grain of rice with her name written on it. Priya thus realises she also loves Ramesh and begins trying to get him to accept her. However, he refuses to accept her as he believes she thinks he is of lower-class. In a subplot, Ramesh witnesses a murder committed by the local gangster Ravi ( Prasanna ). In shock, Ramesh runs away, and eventually trips over an elderly man. The next day, Ravi sends Ramesh to Gujarat as he fears for his safety. A few days later, the deceased’s son appears in the Commissioner’s office with the elderly man, who claims he can identify the boy who ran into him. Apparently, the deceased is an ex-MLA, and the Commissioner decides to deal with the matter himself. The Inspector warns Ravi and his gang, implying to them that the witness should be killed. Meanwhile, Priya receives a call from her mother telling her that her father is going for surgery and asks her to return to the US. Priya tells Ramesh that she will be waiting at the bus stop the next day, at the same place where they first met. If he loves her, he would come. The next day, eventually being coaxed by Kumar, Ramesh goes to see her. On the way, Ravi tries to kill him, but his conscience gets the better of him. However, he also knows there is another goon in the same bus as Priya waiting to kill Ramesh. Ramesh manages to stand in front of Priya, and they hold hands for a while. Ramesh then slips off the steps and is run over by the bus. His mother, friends and Priya mourn his death while the goon who was supposed to kill him slips away. The movie ends with Priya in a car, looking at the grain of rice that has her name on it which Ramesh presented to her for her birthday.

But, Vijay’s happiness is short-lived as Vanamaamalai, his younger brother Ratnam (Azhagam Perumal) and their henchmen barge into his house one night and kill Mithra and Vijay’s mother (Raadhika). They even brutally assault Vijay and attempt to drown Vijay’s baby daughter Niveditha aka Nivi in the bathtub. The dying Mithra manages to rescue Nivi and asks Vijay to take care of her, but not before making him promise that he will quit the police and be a peaceful and loving father to Nivi, following which she dies in Vijay’s arms. Vijay fakes his death, changes his name to Joseph Kuruvilla, maintains a low profile and moves to Kerala with Nivi and his constable friend Rajendran (Rajendran) to protect Nivi from Vanamaamalai and his gang.

A handicapped man Krishna (Suriya) arrives at Mumbai from Kanyakumari at a train station after boarding a train from there. He, along with a taxi driver Raja (Soori), travel around Mumbai to look for his elder brother, Raju. Raja tries to get to know about Krishna but is unable to get any details about him from him. Krishna rents a hotel room, takes a shower, and changes his clothes. He gets Raja to take him to a club, where Krishna then tries to meet an old associate of Raju named Amar, who is a very powerful gangster through his henchmen, but fails. He then meets a close friend of Raju named Rajiv (Asif Basra), who overheard his conversation with Amar’s henchmen. Rajiv tells Krishna that Raju is Raju Bhai (Suriya), a powerful and feared gangster. He then tells things to Krishna about Raju, until he passes out from being drunk.

During the political realm of N. T. Rama Rao, Shankar Narayana is an independent MLA of the constituency of Shankar Nagar, which is named after him, in Hyderabad, and is regarded as a champion for the poor. Kathiravan realizes his mistake and finds out the truth that his sister’s future mother-in-law demands them to bear the marriage expenses which will cost around 10 lakhs totally. He promises to fulfill his sister’s wish.
