The movie takes place in a village in the Salem District where various sculptors come to make a statue. The village head (Sarath Babu) and his wife Rajeshwari (Roja) try to bring in sculptors to complete the statue. However, anyone who comes for the job is driven out of the village by a ghost. The villagers decide to entrust the job to another big man Devanna Gounder (Aadukalam Naren). Trouble erupts between the two families. A flashback reveals the reason for this. Vettri (Ramki) and Masaani (Iniya) make their appearances, where the audience learns of their love for one another. Agitated, Rajeshwari kills Vettri. Masaani dies delivering a boy named Vishva (Akhil). Vishva grows up and comes to the village to finish the task.

Set against the backdrop of a village near Kodaikanal, Vettai Naai revolves around Sekar (RK Suresh), a small-time rowdy, who seeks redemption post his marriage.

The story is about how a young girl is ill-treated by her stepmother and how her brother’s friend saves her and her husband. The movie enjoyed a run of over 200 days at the box office. It was one of the highest grossing Tamil films of the year 1988. The film had musical score by Manoj – Gyan and was released on 23 September 1988. The film was dubbed in Telugu as Sindhoora Puvvu.

Ranganayaki (Vadivukkarasi), a rich women, has three sons : Gopi (Pandu), Madhu (Chinni Jayanth) and Balu (Ramki). Ranganayaki wants absolutely a grandson and she will pass on her whole inheritance to her son who has a male child. The elder sons have only daughters and Balu is still a bachelor.
Balu is a singer in the marriage functions and he falls in love with Swathi (Kushboo), a girl from a middle-class family. He gets married to her and Swathi becomes pregnant. Balu’s best friend, Raja (Vivek), an honest journalist, is married to Shanthi (Anju Aravind) and his wife is also pregnant. Swathi and Shanthi deliver the same day. Balu has a daughter although Raja has a son.
In the meantime, Ranganayaki has a severe heart attack and the doctor says to not reveal shock news. In the hospital, a misunderstanding happens and Balu’s father shows Raja’s son to Ranganayaki in a serious condition. Ranganayaki is immediately recovered. Balu maintains the lie to save his mother’s life. What transpires next forms the rest of the story.

Sanjeev comes to Chennai to earn money for his sister’s marriage.He stays with his uncle singamuthu.He comes across meenakshi, a thief and gradually falls for her.After seeing an advertisement for making quick buck by staying in house for one night,Sanjeev and Singamuthu go to Mosquito kumar.Mosquito Kumar takes them to P.Pandu and tells that they need to stay in house for one night so that P.Pandu can sell the house since people are not ready to buy his house fearing presence of ghost rumours planned by P.Pandu’s rivals.They stay in the house one full night and encounter strange things.They then discover it is the handiwork of meenakshi who is paid by opposite party.Now comes the twist in movie,enter Ramki who is actually planning to rent the house to a marwadi family.Sanjeev,Meenakshi,Singamuthu and Mosquito kumar are cheated by Ramki.They then decide to kill Ramki by various techniques but with no success.Finally they plan to scare out the marwadi family.So they approach Singamuthu who is an fake shaman .Singamuthu promises to send ghosts to Seth house.What happens next forms the rest of the story.
