A singer (Bharathi) who is tricked into marriage by his mother-in-law, his wife (Gowri )is enormously possessive about his fame and his female fans. One day they encounter into a fight and he decides escape from home. On the way he meets someone in the bus who is also running from her life as a dancer because her husband forcefully lets her to prostitution. They both experience some random incidents together and meet an one old couple, who are still very much enjoying love and life. Eventually the old couple dies, and by watching the couple they fall in love themselves. Then Bharathi get a prank call from his PA that Gowri is ill so he returns back to home town with Jyothi. Gowri finds him with another woman and gets furious. She files for a divorce, informs media about Jyothi. Jyothi’s husband gets this news comes to find Jyothi. One thing led to another Gowri finally become mentally unstable because of her own decisions. Bharathi visits her in the mental hospital with Jyothi. Jyothi then understands that Gowri really needs Bharathi and they belong to each other, Jyothi leaves Bharathi with her. Jyothi’s husband becomes a cripple and understands his mistakes, reunites with jyothi in the end.

This film depicts the disputes between two forms of the dance styles and music, Classical Indian (in particular Carnatic music and Bharathanatyam danceform) against rural Tamil folk music and dance. The film depicts the misunderstanding and mutual ignorance of the two factions. The parallel plot in the movie is of the children and intended successors of the respective dance doyens falling in love with each other. The climax ends with a consensus of both the music genres as well as the young couple, hence the name Sangamam.

Surya is a rich spoiled brat, who is also a playboy. He has many girlfriends, whose names are saved in his phone as noodles, lemon, coffee etc. On his way to pick one of his girlfriends, he is kidnapped. He wakes up in a small confined box, with a phone inside. Later, Surya gets a call from the kidnapper. Surya demands the terms to set him free. The kidnapper asks him to cut off his private part within an hour’s time.
An hour later the kidnapper calls back but Surya has not done as he was instructed. Surya begs the kidnapper for his release. The kidnapper asks if Surya remembers the sins he has committed and how many women he has womanised so far. Then Surya remembers the name of a girl named “Kousalya” , an innocent poor girl whom he had cheated in the name of love and recorded their intimate video. After which the girl commits suicide.

36-year-old Vasanthi (Jyothika) is a UD clerk in the Revenue Department. Her husband Tamizhselvan (Rahman) works at All India Radio. The underworld don Billa (Ajith Kumar), featured on Interpol’s criminal list, is hiding and operating out of Malaysia. DSP Jayaprakash (Prabhu) has spent the last few years looking for Billa, leaving behind a life in India.
During a chase with the police, Billa is severely wounded after an accident and dies in front of the DSP. The DSP then secretly holds a burial of Billa. Interpol officer Gokulnath (Rahman) is assigned to work with DSP Jayaprakash to capture elusive Billa as no-one knows of Billa’s death. DSP Jayaprakash keeps the death of Billa as a secret even from his fellow officers, and tracks down a look-alike called Saravana Velu (Ajith Kumar), a lowly pick-pocket. He asks Velu to infiltrate Billa’s gang by pretending to be Billa. In return he will make sure that the child Velu adopted, Karan, gets a proper education.
