Satya (Silambarasan) is the son of a police constable. He gets into fights and ends up in jail where his own father gets him out on bail. While he is returning home from a party drunk, a group of college students beat him up. That is when Suchitra (Rakshitha) comes and takes him to the hospital and gives blood. She is the daughter of a police commissioner. Later, Satya falls in love with Suchitra. That leads to several problems which are faced bravely by Satya in the later part of the film. Finally, all goes well, and Satya also receives the letter confirming his selection for IPS.

The film, set in the 1940s and moving to the 1960s, revolves around the emotional story of Thulasi (Nandita Das) returning to her village to become a dance teacher. She cannot bring herself to forget Vishwa (Mammootty), a man she has been in love with for two decades. Memories of Vishwa haunt her constantly, and upon a chance meeting with him, she discovers he too is struggling with his love for her. Both are haunted by the memory of Thulasi’s cousin, a figure who is unable to control his obsession for his cousin and hide his resentment at Thulasi’s feelings for Vishwa. Thulasi (Nandita) comes to Sundarapuri after her guardians – her grandma and uncle – pass away, to work as teacher in a dance school. It is in Sundarapuri that Vishwa (Mammootty) the zamindar whom she had met 20 years ago, lives. They meet again and the feelings that had blossomed in their hearts as teenagers, are revived. Vishwa is unmarried and Thulasi has gone through an unceremonious ritual in the name of matrimony, but fear of societal stigma and innate inhibition keep them asunder. Sensing their intense love for each other, Pattabhi (a very natural essay by ‘Delhi’ Ganesh once again), the manager at Vishwa’s house, helps them overcome their fears. It is then that Fate enters in the form of Siva (Manoj K. Jayan).

Thirupathi (Ajith Kumar) is a straightforward young man who leads a happy life with his parents and younger sister. He happens to meet Priya (Sadha), and both fall for each other. Thirupathi’s sister is pregnant, and at the time of delivery, he takes her to a hospital. The doctor there expects bribe, but when it is not forthcoming, he neglects his duty; therefore, Thirupathi’s sister dies. Thirupathi comes to know that this is not the first instance in the hospital, and the doctor is his best friend Soori’s (Riyaz Khan) brother (Sampath Raj). When Thirupathi goes out to get Soori’s brother, Soori and his father do all that they can to protect him from Thirupathi. How Thirupathi gets his revenge on the people responsible for his sister’s death forms the rest of the movie.

During his trip, he meets Saraswathi aka Saro (Lekha Washington), who attempts suicide after her parents scold her, and King-Prince, a father-son duo (both roles played by John Vijay) who runs a gambling center. How Sura, in the company of Marthandam and Saro, succeeds in his mission and leaves for Saudi forms the remaining story.

He is hit on by Radhi (Yashika) as office romance. He turns down her interest and reveals he is in love with a girl who resides in Bangalore and he is going to visit her. Ram drives to Bangalore and meets Charu (Amala Paul) in her apartment. While sleeping, Ram wakes up goes to the streets, search and kills a person (one of them in the car in first scene). Eventually it is revealed that Charu is in some danger and Ram is safeguarding her by not letting her out of that apartment until he cleans up the city for her safety.

Although Bhoopathy also likes Priya, he controls his emotions and keeps silent. He tries to leave but is caught by Vishwanathan and is forced to come back. Priya receives a call from her friend to come to her wedding. On the insistence of Priya’s younger sister, Vishwanathan sends Bhoopathy along with them. There the groom Sriman (Sriman) makes him drunk and he reveals his feelings about Priya. They become friends soon. Then they all go to Black Thunder and a photographer (Pandiarajan) they meet takes a photo of Bhoopathy and Priya holding hands.
