Muthupandi (Prabhu) takes care of his only sister Kavitha (Trisha), following their mother’s early death when they were young. Santhosh (Jayam Ravi) is the only of son of a London-based business tycoon Krishnan (Bhagyaraj) and Janaki (Geetha). He comes to Chennai along with Janaki to attend his cousin Lalitha’s (Richa Pallod) wedding. Lalitha is Kavitha’s best friend, and she too comes to Chennai a few days before the wedding. Santhosh, a fun-loving person, develops an attraction immediately after seeing Kavitha, but Kavitha does not reciprocate, and she maintains distance with Santhosh.

Murugappa ‘Munaruna’ (Dhanush) is a Tamil worker in 1960s Burma. His friend Saamuda falls in love with Mallika, but Mallika loves Munaruna. Munaruna saves Samudra (Amyra Dastur), the daughter of a Burmese army general, from a Ferris wheel accident and they fall in love. When Mallika learns about this, she is devastated and marries Saamuda. The Burmese general disapproves of the union between Munaruna and Samudra, and revokes the privileges that the Tamil immigrants had until then. Violence breaks out and the Tamil nationals flee Burma. Munaruna and Samudra join the refugees on a ship with Saamuda and Mallika. When Samudra’s father comes looking for her, Mallika spitefully reveals where they are hiding. As Samudra and Munaruna try to escape by diving into the ocean, Munaruna is shot and killed. Samudra handcuffs herself to Munaruna and drowns with him after promising to be together forever.

Murthy (Prashanth) earns his living taking the blame for the mistakes of other people, and so the jail is his second home. Dhanushkodi (Raghuvaran) has sworn to kill ex-collector Ramanathan’s (Vijayakumar) son Santhosh (Praveen Gandhi), and so, Ramanathan has transferred Santhosh to Mauritius while telling the world he has run away. Wishing to save his son, he hires Murthy to act as him, hoping Dhanushkodi would kill him instead of his actual son. Murthy too accepts the gig since his lover Preeti (Jyotika) is Ramanathan’s niece. In the climax, Santhosh supports Dhanushkodi for killing his father, but Dhanushkodi kills Santhosh. The film ends with Murthy taking the blame for killing Santhosh and surrendering himself to police.
